The Brussels Office of the Swedish Trade Unions

The Brussels Office of the Swedish Trade Unions was established in 1989 and is run by the three Swedish trade union confederations LO, TCO and Saco. Together we represent almost 3 million workers. The main task of the office is to cover European politics, in general, and to support the work of LO, TCO and Saco and their affiliates to shape and influence European policies that are of particular interest to workers. European decision making is important to workers as it affects their daily life. Trade unions must therefore keep track of the development of new initiatives and laws.

The Brussels Office provides information concerning proposals for directives by the European Commission, opinions of the European Parliament and resolutions adopted by the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), primarily concerning economic policy, labour market policy and social policy.

The Brussels Office has an extensive network. We play an important role as a link between Sweden and the EU. We assist LO, TCO, Saco and their affiliates with contacts and information in Brussels.

The Brussels Office provides information through its website www.fackligt.eu which is updated regularly with the latest news and articles. The website can also be reached through www.brysselkontoret.se. Moreover, it contains information about various directives regarding the labour market and has links to the websites of the ETUC and the European Institutions among others.

In addition, the Brussels Office receives many visitors and draws up programmes for trade union groups that want to learn more about the EU and visit the institutions in Brussels. The office welcomes about 1500 to 2000 visitors every year.

Also politicians, civil servants, journalists, researchers and others receive information and news from the Brussels Office regarding European policies and analysis from a trade union perspective.
